How glass fiber is shaping the internet

  • күнү жарыяланды Ай мурун

    The Verge

All modern means of communication rely on glass. From the Gorilla glass on our phones to the infotainment screens on our cars. But when I think of the internet I think of 5G, Starlink satellites, and WiFi, and I never think about the 750,000 miles of fiber optic cables currently running under our oceans: the tiny strands of glass that carry all of our photos, emails, and video chats. It is through these hair-thin strands of fiber that we are able to instantly communicate to almost anyone, anywhere, and it all relies on a 5,000-year-old technology: glass.

I think you need to get some of your facts straight. Fiber is better in many ways than copper but for example fiber and coax have about the same velocity of propagation, aka light signal and RF signal both travel at about the same percentage of speed of light through the line. Also when you say electrons can’t pass through each other, are you implying that only one RF channel can exist at a time on a coax line lol? It almost sounds like your talking about Morse code limitations from the early 1900s. Modern day coax uses electromagnetic waves and can carry hundreds of channels and frequencies at once, it’s called frequency-division multiplexing (FDM).

Yes, electrons do not move as fast as light, they are pretty slow in fact, but this doesnt matter, because it‘s the electric field, that carries the information in a cable and it does indeed propagate at the speed of light.

Yeah, that's what I also thought. I don't get how such a fundamental thing is repeated in a wrong way over and over again. If it were the electrons, I also would have to wait for minutes until the light turns on in my room after pushing the button.

You keep talking about how the data travels by electrons and even mention that they very slowly along the wire and this is true. But they actually move much too slowly to send data along. This is is where your error is. Data is not sent along as electrons flow but actually as a wave, which is much faster. One electron 'bumping' into another etc can send a signal much faster than sending electrons down a wire.

Germanys internet still runs on copper in big parts of the country. All because of our chancellor back in the 80s who made a backroom deal with a friend of his who ran some TV stations to sideline glass fiber expansion and lay more copper because it was cheaper and apparently more beneficial to TV signals. So its nice and all that this tech is evolving, but god damn politicians man...

I've gotta nitpick. The signal in a copper cable travels extremely fast. Very close to the speed of light in a vacuum. Light in a glass fibre is ~30% slower than that. Glass fibre adds significant latency over long distances and this is a huge problem. Low Earth orbit satellite networks will achieve better latency than glass despite a larger circumference round the Earth. Optical fibres are used for their low attenuation and some other benefits. If developers can get the distance and reliability out of copper or aluminium you we might see fibre optics being overlaid with traditional cables for latency sensitive applications. Hollow core fibre would also solve this. You can put multiple frequencies down a normal cable just the same. Electrical signals are still waves. They're not counting electrons coming through.
